* LESSON

* LESSON: MAN SINS

Bible Memory Verse:

WHAT WAS THE MEMORY VERSE WE LEARNED LAST WEEK? ("In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1) ON WHAT DAYDID GOD CREATE MAN AND WOMAN? WHAT WERE THE NAMES OF THE FIRST MAN AND THE FIRST WOMAN GOD CREATED? God made a beautiful garden for Adam and Eve to live called the Garden of Eden. There was no sickness, unhappiness or death in the Garden of Eden. There were many beautiful things to look at and enjoy. Adam and Eve ate vegetables from a garden that had no weeds and fruit from different kinds of trees. Perhaps they had other food that we are not told about. They didn’t eat meat because nothing was killed in God’s beautiful world. Even the mosquitoes didn’t bite people. It was a very happy world–no angry words or yelling because Adam and Eve were always good. They didn’t even know what it means to disobey God. They had only one rule to obey–don’t eat fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. That sounds pretty easy–right?

Every night God came and walked and talked with them. God was very pleased with the world that He had made and the two people who loved Him.

But Satan was not pleased. WHO IS SATAN? Satan is the enemy of God. He hates God and he hates people because God created them. God created Satan a long time before God created man. Satan was created perfectly. In fact, because of his beauty and wisdom, he became proud and wanted to be like God. Satan wants to be worshipped. He knew man was created to worship God. He knew that man given the right to rule the earth. Satan knew that if man disobeyed God then he would rule the world.

Satan thought about the one rule God had told Adam and Eve to obey. WHAT WAS THAT RULE? If Satan could get Adam and Eve to disobey that one rule, then they would know sin and evil and then everything would be ruined. God had given man the earth to enjoy. He wanted man to talk to Him and find out to take care of the world.

Satan came up with a plan. He changed himself into a serpent and went to talk to Eve. He said, "Did God REALLY say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?"

Eve said, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

Satan said, "You will not SURELY die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

Eve thought about it. The fruit would be good to eat and if it would make her wise, she wanted it. So she took it and ate it. When she did, she was deciding to disobey God and that was sin. Then she offered it to Adam. He should have said, "No!" because God had said, "No!" Adam decided to disobey God so he ate the fruit and that was sin.

As soon as Adam and Eve ate the fruit, what Satan said came true. They did know about good and evil. But what Satan hadn’t told them was that this would make them very unhappy. Now they knew what sin was and they knew they had sinned. They wanted to hide from God because they knew He would not be pleased.

God was not pleased. He never sins and He hates sin and He has to punish sin. Because God knows everything, He knew what they had done, and He was sad.

Before they sinned they were naked but were not ashamed. The glory of God had surrounded them. After they sinned they were separated from the glory of God. Now they realized they were naked and wanted to hide from God and each other. They sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

That night when they heard God walking in the garden they hid. God called them and said, "Where are you?"

Adam said, "I heard you in the garden, and I hid.”

God said, "Why did you hide? Did you eat from the tree I told you not to?"

Before Adam and Eve loved each other and were kind to each other. Now Adam blamed Eve and He blamed God: “The woman you put here with me-she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

God asked Eve and she blamed the serpent: “The serpent deceived me and I ate.”

God punished the serpent. It used to be beautiful. Now it had to crawl on its belly in the dust. God foretold (or told ahead of time) that Satan would be destroyed (Genesis 3:14-15). We know that Satan will be destroyed because God always tells the truth.

IS SATAN STILL ALIVE TODAY? Yes. When Adam and Eve sinned Satan became the ruler of this earth, and most men obey him. That is why there is so much suffering on the earth. Man, tempted by Satan, chooses to do things to cause harm. The Bible tells us that if we do not obey God, we obey Satan. But we can choose to obey God. If we ask Jesus to come into our hearts and be our Lord and Savior, then Jesus will help us to obey and serve God.

Even though Satan is the ruler of the earth, he can only do what God allows him to do. Someday Satan will be thrown into a lake of fire, which God created for Satan and Satan’s angels. Hell was not created for man, but if a man chooses to disobey God by not believing in His Son Jesus Christ.

Eve’s punishment was that now she would feel pain when she had her babies. Adam’s punishment was that now the job of making things grow would be hard. Weeds and thorns would choke out the good plants he was trying to grow. He would have to work very hard to get enough to eat.

Other things happened when Adam and Eve chose to disobey. Animals started killing and eating each other. They would not do what Adam wanted them to do. Now Adam and Eve were afraid of them.

But God still loved Adam and Eve. He made garments out of skin for them. Then Adam and Eve were sent out of the beautiful garden and not allowed in because God couldn’t trust them to obey Him. He did not want them to eat from the tree of life that was in that garden and live forever as sinful people. He sent an angel to guard the entrance to the Garden of Eden.

Now Adam and Eve would die. Satan had tricked Eve. They did not SURELY die; they did not die right away, but they began to grow old which would never have happened if they had not sinned.

Worst of all was that they did not talk to God like they used to. Sin separates us from God. And because Adam and Eve chose to sin every baby would grow up having sin in their heart and wanting to disobey God.

Because God still loved the people He had made, He made a promise to them. He said, "Someday I am going to send a Savior who will come and die to take the punishment for your sins. If you ask Me, I will forgive your sins because He will take the punishment you deserve." WHO IS THE SAVIOR THAT WAS BORN TO DIE FOR OUR SINS?

The Savior God promised did not come for a long, long time. But God always keeps His promises. God sent His only Son, Jesus, to die in place of sinful man. Whoever believes and trusts in Him will live forever in heaven where there is no sickness, sorrow or death. What a wonderful answer to God’s promise!

QUESTIONS:

1. What was the name of the beautiful garden God made for Adam and Eve?

2. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star (the Hebrew is “Lucifer”), son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations. You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones. Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor…” Ezekiel 28:12-17

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.” Ephesians 2:2

“He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.” Revelation 20:2

* HANDOUT:

MAN SINS Bible Memory Verse:

Words to choose from: SIN, PRIDE, DEVIL, EDEN, HELL, LIFE, SEPARATES, SAVIOR, PAIN, GOOD, EVIL

1. __ __ __ __ was the name of the beautiful garden God made for Adam and Eve?

2.
