* LESSON

* LESSON: JOHN THE BAPTIST (BAPTISM AND DEATH)

Bible Memory Verse:

WHO DID GOD SEND JOHN THE BAPTIST TO DO? (get people ready for when Jesus came) It had been told many years ahead of time that there would be a messenger sent to tell everyone that Jesus, the Savior of the world, was coming. The messenger that God sent was John the Baptist: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”–”a voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” Mark 1:2-3 (Malachi 3:1 & Isaiah 40:3)

John was called John the Baptist because he baptized people. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE BAPTIZED? HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANYONE BAPTIZED? (pastor or minister puts people under the water and brings them up again). John baptized people who wanted to show that they were going to stop doing things their own way and start doing things God’s way. He told them to stop sinning because the kingdom of God was coming: "Paul said, ‘John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, Jesus.” Acts 19:4

John the Baptist lived in the desert. He wore clothes of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts (grasshoppers) and wild honey. He went about telling people to repent (change their minds so that they would obey God) because the Lord was coming. He said, “After me will come one more powerful than I, the throngs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” John 1:27 (Jesus is coming and He is so much more special than me that I am not good enough to untie His shoes)

Large crowds gathered around John. They asked him what they should do to get ready for the Lord. If they repented (were sorry for their sins and wanted to change) John would baptize them.

One day John saw Jesus coming. God told John that the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove would come down and land on Jesus and stay there. This way John would know it was God’s own Son. When John saw the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove light on Jesus he said to the people, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world…I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.” John 1:29-34

At the moment Jesus came out of the water, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove lighted on Him, and the voice of God came from heaven and said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17 The three persons of the Godhead were there–God the Father spoke from heaven, God the Son was baptized and God the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove lighted on Jesus.

John baptized people who wanted to show that they were sorry for their sins. Today a person that is being baptized wants to show that he is sorry for his sins and has asked Jesus to forgive him of his sins. He believes that Jesus died for his sins and rose from the dead. When a person goes under the water, it is a picture of how his sins were buried when Jesus was buried. When a person comes out of the water, it is a picture of how he has raised a new person with a clean heart. He can now sit with Jesus in heavenly places. That is where Jesus is now after He rose from the dead.

When people are baptized, they are showing that they have accepted Jesus’ gift of dying for their sins. At this time Herod was king of Judah (not the same Herod that ruled when Jesus was born—one of his sons) Herod locked John up in prison. John the Baptist was not afraid to tell people they were sinning. John told Herod the King that he was sinning by marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, because his brother was still alive: “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” Mark 6:18 Herodias was angry with John and wanted to kill him, but King Herod protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled, yet he liked to listen to him.

Finally the opportunity came for Herodias to kill John. On Herod’s birthday he gave a party for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. The daughter of Herodias danced for Herod at his party and he and his dinner guests were so pleased with her that Herod said, “Ask me for anything you want and I will give it to you.” And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.” King Herod was greatly distressed but because of his promise to give her whatever she asked for in front of his dinner guests, he immediately sent executioners to the prison to kill John. The followers of John the Baptist came to get his body and bury it. Then they went to tell Jesus. Even though John the Baptist had such a terrible death, he is now in heaven with Jesus–a place where there is no pain, sickness, sadness or death. Wicked King Herod and his wife, Herodias will be in hell. Even though they seemed to get their way on earth, someday God will judge them for the evil they have done.

* HANDOUT:

JOHN THE BAPTIST—Part 2

Bible Memory Verse:

Words to choose from: AFRAID, HEAVEN, GOD, HELL, DOVE, SINNING, WATER, PRISON, BIRTHDAY, FATHER

1.
“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” John 1:29

Jesus asked John to baptize Him, but John said, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Matthew 3:14 But Jesus wanted to do everything that God had written in His law to do. So John baptized Jesus.

We have all sinned. Jesus died on the cross so He could pay the penalty for our sin. Only Jesus can take away our sin. We just have to ask Him to take away our sin, and be willing to live like He wants us to.

She went out and asked her mother, "What should I ask for?"

“The head of John the Baptist on a platter,” her mother, Herodias, answered.

At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request, “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
